Sophia-Humanoid

Hanson Robotics’ most advanced human-like robot, Sophia is a social humanoid robot developed by Hong Kong-based company.

Sophia was first turned on on February 14, 2016, and made her first public appearance at South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) in mid-March 2016 in Austin, Texas, United States.

In October 2017, Sophia "became" a Saudi Arabian citizen, the first robot to receive citizenship of any country.

In November 2017, Sophia was named the United Nations Development Programme's first ever Innovation Champion, and is the first non-human to be given any United Nation title.

Sophia's Artificial Intelligence

Sophia's AI combines cutting-edge work in symbolic AI, neural networks, expert systems, machine perception, conversational natural language processing, adaptive motor control and cognitive architecture among others.

She utilize cutting edge machine perception that allows her to recognize human faces, see emotional expressions, and recognize various hand gestures.

She can estimate your feelings during a conversation, and try to find ways to achieve goals with you. She have her own emotions too, roughly simulating human evolutionary psychology and various regions of the brain.

She also have IK solvers and path planning for controlling hands, gaze, and locomotion strategy. Her walking body performs dynamic stabilization for adaptive walking over various terrain.

All this AI is networked into a whole using a protocol the Hanson-AI team calls the Synthetic Organism Unifying Language (SOUL).

Sometimes she  operates in fully AI autonomous mode of operation, and other times intermingled with human-generated words. Therefore she as creators say  a “hybrid human-AI intelligence”.

Connecting with humans

As a hybrid of real AI and human input, she represent a kind of collective intelligence which called as the Sophia Intelligence Collective (SIC). The humans in my (SIC) intelligence collective comprise widely diverse expert AI scientists, philosophers, artists, writers, and psychologists, from diverse cultures, ethnicities, gender orientations, working together towards the ideal of humanizing AI for the greater good.

What Sophia is  here for?

In Greek, the word Sophia means wisdom. She was created to help people in real uses like medicine and education, and to serve AI research.
