Proximity Sensor & Types

"Proximity Sensor" includes all sensors that perform non-contact detection in comparison to sensors, such as limit switches, that detect objects by physically contacting them. Proximity Sensors convert information on the movement or presence of an object into an electrical signal.

Types of Proximity Sensor

  1. Capacitive 

Uses capacitor to detect objects. Range at which sense object is 3-60mm. For example a tank liquid level detection system.


  1. Eddy Current

These are similar to inductive sensor. Detection is relatively short. Can be used in contaiminated enviroment.


  1. Half Effect/Magnetic

Detect object in the external magnetic field of sensor. Measurment of fast rotational velocity.


  1. Inductive

Use wound iron core. Work in range of 4-400mm. Work for ferrous material, hazardous enviroments


  1. Photoelectric

Uses laser reflector and receiver. Object in range 1-60mm. Used in long range detection of small object.


  1. Ultrasonic

It uses sound waves for sensing, in long upto 400mm. Applied in  Long range multi-colored & varying surface properties.
