Community Radio Station.
Community radio is a distinct media sector and a vital alternative to state owned public broadcaster and commercial private media. It is an important medium for communities to express their own issues and concerns in their own languages and in ways that is culturally appropriate for them.
CR's are usually determined by the following common characteristics:
1)Community radio must not be for profit but run for social gain and community empowerment;
2)It should be accountable to the community it seeks to serves and must demonstrate community participation, management and ownership in its structure;
3)Its purpose is to build community life, lend a voice to members of community, especially those that are generally deprived and support community development.
Community Radio in India
In 2006, the government of India amended the community radio policy which allowed the
-Agricultural universities,
-Educational institutions(including IIT/IIM's)
-Civil society institutions such as NGOs to apply for a community radio broadcasting license under the FM band 88–108 MHz.
On 1 February 2004, Anna FM was launched as India's first campus “community” radio station by Dr. Sreedher Ramamurthy, the then Director of its Audio visual Research centre of the Anna University. He is regarded as the father of community radio in India.
First NGO operated community Radio in India was Sangham Radio licensed to Deccan Development Society which started broadcasting on 2008 in Pastapur village, Medak district, Andhra Pradesh.
On 17 May 2007, karnatak agriculture university had it's Community Radio established.
As of January 2024, there are 481 Community Radio Stations in India, serving farmer, tribal, coastal communities, ethnic minorities and special interests.
