Stranded in Space - Sunita Williams
Sunita Williams Born September 19, 1965 in Euclid, Ohio to Dr. Deepak and Bonnie Pandya.
Sunita Williams was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in June 1998. She completed two years of intensive training, which included scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction in shuttle and International Space Station (ISS) systems, physiological training, T-38 flight training, and water and wilderness survival training.
She is a veteran of two space missions,Expeditions 14/15 dec 9, 2006 to June 22, 2007 and 32/33 July 14, 2012 to no 18, 2012.
She is currently serving as the pilot of the Crew Flight Test mission aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft – the first crewed flight for that vehicle – and her third mission aboard the International Space Station
Mission
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on June 5, 2024.
Their mission was to test the Starliner in its first manned flight, a significant milestone for Boeing’s commercial crew program.
Starliner's success will determine if the spacecraft will be certified to fly six-month astronaut missions to and from the ISS for NASA, a service already provided by Elon Musk's SpaceX.
Delay
The Starliner, which docked at the ISS on June 13, 2024, was initially scheduled to return to Earth after a week-long mission.
The spacecraft successfully docked with the ISS, but as it approached, five of its 28 thrusters unexpectedly shut down. Additionally, engineers discovered five small helium leaks in the spacecraft’s service module. These issues have prevented the Starliner from safely undocking and returning to Earth.
Plan B
Engineers are working tirelessly to resolve the problems, with potential alternatives, including a SpaceX Dragon capsule, being considered to ensure the astronauts' safe return amidst a challenging mission.
