"Aatmanirbhar Bharat" Mission – INS Arnala


What is ‘INS Arnala?

INS Arnala is the first of eight planned Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) for the Indian Navy, commissioned on June 18, 2025. It's designed for shallow water anti-submarine operations, surveillance, and mine-laying in coastal regions. The vessel is a significant step towards "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" (self-reliant India), with over 80% indigenous content. 

The ship is named after a historic fort off the coast of Maharashtra. 

The ship's motto is "Arnave Shauryam," meaning "Valour in the Ocean". 


Showcasing Indigenous Talent

The project involves over 55 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and highlights the capabilities of Indian industry. 

Designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in collaboration with L&T Shipyard. 

INS Arnala is a testament to India's growing self-reliance in defense manufacturing, upholding the Government’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ with over 80% indigenous content.

Features

Anti-submarine warfare (ASW), subsurface surveillance, search and rescue, and low-intensity maritime operations (LIMO). 

Specifically designed for operations in coastal waters, with a shallow draft. 

Equipped with sonar, fire control systems, and other advanced technologies for ASW. 

The largest Indian naval warship with a diesel engine-waterjet combination. It measures 77.6 meters in length and displaces over 1,490 tonnes. 

The commissioning strengthens India's coastal defense and its ability to operate in the Indian Ocean Region. 

Can lay mines in coastal waters, enhancing India's defense. :

The warship has been designed and constructed as per the Classification Rules of Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) of GRSE with M/s L&T Shipyard
