What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a whole-body (holistic) system of medicine that began in India more than 3,000 years ago. Ayurveda means the study of life. It takes a natural approach to all aspects of health and well-being.
Ayurveda is based on the idea that each person has certain life forces (doshas) and everything in the universe is connected.
Ayurveda, doshas are - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and each individual possesses a unique combination of these doshas that influences their physical and mental characteristics.
Vata:
Associated with the elements of air and space, Vata governs movement, circulation, and nervous system functions. It is characterized by qualities like dry, light, cold, and mobile.
Pitta:
Associated with the elements of fire and water, Pitta governs metabolism, digestion, and body temperature. It is characterized by qualities like hot, sharp, oily, and liquid.
Kapha:
Associated with the elements of earth and water, Kapha governs structure, stability, and lubrication. It is characterized by qualities like heavy, slow, cool, and smooth.
Doshas determine individual constitution (Prakriti): Each person has a unique proportion of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, which shapes their physical and mental characteristics.
Dosha imbalances can lead to illness:
When the doshas are out of balance, it can manifest as various physical and mental ailments.
