What are weather balloon made of?
Latex: The most common material, which gives the balloon the high elasticity needed to expand up to 20 feet in diameter before popping.
Neoprene (Chloroprene): A synthetic rubber used for its durability and better resistance to extreme temperatures and ozone in the upper stratosphere.
Polyethylene: Used for specialized, massive scientific balloons (like those used by NASA) that are meant to float for long durations at extremely high altitudes without bursting.
How much time it takes balloon decay?
The decay time of the balloon's physical material (natural rubber latex) depends on the environment:
On Land: Typically decomposes in 6 to 48 months.
In Water/Oceans: Can take a year or more to degrade.
Danger to Wildlife, and Environment?
Inflated balloons that make their way back to earth or water, pose a risk for wildlife due to their probability of becoming ingested.
“For years, biologists have documented the negative impacts of latex balloons on marine wildlife.
“Natural latex is biodegradable and environmentally safe, but, according to Rubber Technology, it is treated with ammonia and with tetramethyl thiuram disulfide plus zinc oxide as a preservative against bacterial decomposition. Balloons are usually made with a small amount of plasticizer added. They hardly classify as natural after all that. In fact, sewage treatment plant operators report that latex is one of several problem materials that are not affected by the biological treatment system.”
