Nepal Flood

Nepal Flood

On 26 August 2026, devastating flash floods struck along the Nepal-Tibet border, sweeping away homes, roads and bridges and cutting off entire communities.
Death toll rises to 1050, 4000 still missing, and 12000 rescued on 1 September 2026.

Caused by the lower section of the glacier near the Langtang Lirung mountain peak breaking away and plunging into the valley below, triggering an avalanche of ice and rock and a massive landslide.

Future events
Experts and authorities have warned of an extremely high risk of secondary disasters in the valley, particularly from the lake formed by glacier debris, also a larger body of water at the foot of the glacier collapse.

Flood risks will remain until both lakes have fully drained. The lake is watched by radar and drones , 24-hour surveillance.
